Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting

Kay Thomas

Sumi-e means black ink painting. The black ink on white paper is simple, elegant, and serene. The goal of the sumi-e painter is to use the brush with both vitality and restraint. Sumi-e is more than technique; it is a spiritual journey. Discover the history of this contemplative art form brought to Japan by Zen monks who practiced sumi-e to develop patience, concentration, and discipline. Use the unique tools known as the Four Treasures on handmade paper as you paint several pictures of classic symbolic nature subjects using the simple brush strokes. Simplicity is the main characteristic you will paint to express the essence of the subject. Less is more. Even a novice can produce a painting to be proud of that demonstrates the style and simplicity of this art form.

No previous painting or art experience is needed. Please purchase art supplies that include one ink stick and one ink stone or one bottle of Japanese black ink, one medium Japanese or Chinese brush, and one pad of rice paper (Hosho) 9 X 12 inches. You can purchase supplies online at Amazon.
